EoE is a real medical condition that requires the help of specialists who understand it. They usually have the most experience with EoE and can order tests to determine whether you have it. Getting the right diagnosis is the first step toward feeling better.

  • They specialize in conditions of the digestive tract, like EoE. Gastroenterologists can perform specific tests like an endoscopy to find out whether you actually have EoE. They can recommend certain things that may help if you do have it.

  • These doctors will do tests to see if you're having an allergic reaction to certain foods or substances, and then help you figure out what triggers to avoid. They'll also show you how to manage related problems like asthma, eczema, and allergic rhinitis, which can be caused by things like pollen or pet dander.

  • This is usually your regular doctor. He or she can refer you to EoE specialists, including gastroenterologists, allergists, and immunologists.

CHECKING FOR EoE STARTS WITH TAKING A CLOSER LOOK RIGHT WHERE IT STARTS

Getting diagnosed is an important step. Your gastroenterologist may want to do an endoscopy to see if your esophagus looks healthy. This involves putting a thin, flexible tube with a light and a camera into your esophagus to have a look.

Taking a small sample can give your doctor a more complete picture of what's going on.

Your gastroenterologist may also decide to take a small sample from your esophagus to see if there are any eosinophils in it, and if so, how many. This is called a "biopsy."
